Come worship with us!

We know it can feel a little intimidating to visit a church for the first time, but we hope you feel warmly welcomed and comfortable at St. Mark’s UMC. We are a spiritual home to people from many places in life, believers and questioners, people from a variety of backgrounds and faith perspectives, who come together to worship God, grow in faith and love, ask questions, and serve God’s creation.

St. Mark’s is a Reconciling Ministry, part of a network of United Methodist Churches striving to express Christ’s inclusive love and mobilize all Methodists to embrace the diversity of gender and sexuality in our world.

Got some questions?

+ What happens at a typical worship service?

You'll receive a worship guide ("bulletin") prior to the service which will outline the plan for that Sunday's worship. Most of the time this includes a mix of prayer, song, scripture readings, a sermon (reflection), and opportunity for prayer. We also offer Holy Communion at least one a month, usually on the first Sunday.

+ How long is a typical worship service?

Most worship services last about an hour. Many folks like to visit with others in the congregation before and after worship, so feel free to arrive early or stay late if you wish.

+ What should I wear?

Wear what makes you comfortable and dress as who you are. We believe that God cares more about our hearts and our connections, so we encourage you to dress the way that feels most appropriate to you.

+ Do you offer childcare or Sunday School?

Yes! Children, youth, families, and intergenerational connections are very important to everyone at St. Mark's. We welcome all families, however you define it. We offer special programming for children on Sundays, and many of our adult programs offer childcare. Click to learn more about our children and youth programming.

+ Will I have to introduce myself?

You can expect a warm greeting from members of the congregation, but don't be nervous! You won't be asked to stand up and introduce yourself, nor will you be asked to walk down the aisle and speak to everyone. Most of our worship services include the ancient Christian tradition of the "Passing of the Peace" as part of the liturgy, so you will get a chance to meet those seated immediately around you.

+ Do I have to put money in the offering plate?

You don't have to give anything. Offering is a chance to give from your abundance and acknowledge the many gifts that God has given you. If you do share a gift, you can be sure it will be used thoughtfully and prayerfully.

+ Do I have to be a church member to take communion?

At St. Mark's, all are welcome at the Table. Communion is a sacrament of the church, a special way of experiencing God and sharing in the life of the community of faith. You are welcome at the table without regard to church membership or belief.
